Dear Shalem Friends,
It is with deep sadness and profound love that we let you know of Jerry May's death. Jerry had been struggling valiantly against several infections following two recent surgeries. Surrounded by family members and loved ones, he died peacefully April 8th.
Shalem's Senior Fellow of Contemplative Psychology and Spirituality, Jerry was well-known for his writings on psychology and spirituality, for his teaching and for his gifts as a spiritual guide. He authored numerous articles and books over the span of 35 years, including Addiction & Grace, Will & Spirit, The Awakened Heart, and most recently, Dark Night of the Soul.
Born June 12, 1940 in Hillsdale, Michigan, he graduated from Wayne State University College of Medicine in 1965 and was certified in psychiatry in 197l. He practiced psychiatry from 1971-1988, joining the Shalem staff first as an associate in 1973, then as a full-time staff member in 1983. From 1983 to 2005, he served Shalem as Director of Spiritual Guidance, Director for Research and Program Development, and finally as Senior Fellow in Contemplative Theology and Psychology.
A Memorial Service in Celebration of Jerry's life and ministry will be held April 14, 4:30 PM in the chapel at Bon Secours Spiritual Center, Marriottsville, MD. A reception will follow in the Potel Room.

The blue bird rose from the tufted grass,
A spicy blue, a chip of the wind
Blown slantwise a moment. Where darkness skimmed
Under running cloud I saw him pass,
And my breath was caught with the breath of his going,
Fragile blue on a toss of air.
The hawk that wheeled where the sky was flowing
Will never remember and never care;
But some of the breath of my body was taken
And some of the blue of his body was left
Deep, deep in the blood where memories waken
When bluebirds have blown and the heart is bereft.
