David is the director of the global spiritual network Emissaries of Divine Light. He lives at Sunrise Ranch, the headquarters for EDL, located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.
David provides counseling and seminars in spiritual awakening and transformation both at Sunrise Ranch and in many locations around the world. He has still found time to create several creative projects with family and friends including CDs "Open Green" and "Living Prayer" as well as a collection of poems by himself and others entitled "In the Sunlit Place we Dwell."
Sunrise Ranch is a spiritual center that is home to approximately sixty men, women, and children. It is also a conference and retreat center with a reputation as an ideal setting for various kinds of group work. Emissaries have been stewarding the land with care and love since its founding in 1945 and currently manage an organic farm there. Activities at Sunrise include Sunday morning services at 11 a.m. in our Dome Chapel followed by a nutritious lunch in the dining room. You are also welcome to join us for volunteer projects, Dances of Universal Peace, Wednesday evening services, and creative social events.

I listen to people's stories and give them back to them, I said when someone asked me what I do. I love journeying with other strugglers looking for grace in the grit of relationships and vocation - and for fresh language to express the yearnings of the heart. After two decades as a pastor left me hungering, I trained at Shalem Institute in Maryland, and founded Oasis Ministries for Spiritual Development in Pa.

As a pilgrim of East and West, I see spiritual companioning as one beggar showing other beggars where to find bread whether meeting in person, in retreats, or through my writings.
I am author of several books, including What Would I Believe If I Didn't Believe Anything?: A Handbook for Spiritual Orphans, Active Spirituality: A Guide for Seekers and Ministers, Journeymen: A Spiritual Guide for Men, The Soul of Tomorrow's Church, and Writing Tides: Finding Grace and Growth through Writing (2007).
I offer individual spiritual direction and lead workshops and retreats developing themes like my writings - and Healing Environments, Honest to God Prayer, Writing and Journaling Dreaming Awake, Renewing the Soul of Leadership.

Spiritual Companionship
Spiritual companionship has a long tradition in the Catholic Church. Once a component of the spiritual formation of professed religious men and women, this practice is now available to lay persons as well. Also known as spiritual direction, guidance, or mentoring, spiritual companionship is a holy friendship. It provides a connection between two individuals to hold that most intimate of conversations, God in our lives. The dialogue is safe, nonjudgmental and confidential. In addition, our time together is comfortable, fun and sacred. I welcome women from all faith experiences.

Speaking
I am available for speaking engagements to small and large groups. I have over 25 years of experience both locally and nationally. I am equally comfortable with small faith sharing groups as I am with large conventions. I love doing keynote addresses as well as breakout sessions, panels and informal gatherings.
Topics include but are not limited to:
* Finding meaning in caregiving
* Worship for introverts in an extrovert church
* Prayer, where to begin
* The women in Jesus' life
* The care giver survival kit
* Fun with faith
* My journey as a caregiver
* The necessity of knowing your true self
* Be still and know: treasuring silence in a busy world

"Nancy Hooyman, wife, mother, doctor, has always been extremely conscientious about her own spiritual development. Being naturally intelligent and reflectively studious regarding her Christian faith makes her an able companion to the journey of another."
