Sink into Hygge! (Hygge is a Danish word used for a quality of coziness or comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being.) This retreat at Prairiewoods (120 East Boyson Road in Hiawatha) is for bibliophiles, lovers of words and seekers of wisdom on the page. The entire weekend is devoted to the spiritual nourishment of reading, paired with the peace and comfort of Prairiewoods in winter. Facilitators Jenifer Hanson and Laura Weber will transform Prairiewoods into a country estate designed to pay homage to readers’ beloved books and authors, and to call forth an interior dialogue with the written word. Around the fire in the Great Expectations Living Room, we will delve into reading as spiritual nourishment, reflecting on the nature of sacred metaphor and language as sacrament for the soul. There will be plenty of time for quiet reading! Come prepared for a banquet at which each guest assumes an alter-ego, impersonating a character or author who has been a spiritual catalyst and has inspired us to “suck all the marrow of life.” An experience of communal reading and reflection sends us forth refreshed and inspired to keep calm and read on. The cost of this weekend retreat is $230 and includes sessions, lodging and all meals. The commuter fee is $180 and includes sessions, Saturday lunch and dinner, and Sunday lunch.
