"The spiritual recesses of hearts in spoken word reflect the Word Who came to be among us and remains with us. The Holy Spirit of the Living God is closer to us than breath. In every cell of every creature lives a spark of the Creator, Who is Love. Let us share our thoughts through breath and word. Let God be God within and among us. We will celebrate the truth of God's Presence, alive, and well." - Anne Cappelletti.

Saint Joseph Retreat Center
137 Mount St. Joseph Road
Wheeling, WV 26003

Sister Mary Clark, SSJ

A hundred-acre rural setting is the backdrop of Saint Joseph Retreat Center. The Center offers a comfortable and homelike atmosphere marked by hospitality, simplicity, and quiet.

The Center provides a restful and peace-filled environment for an unstructured retreat. There are several Sisters of St. Joseph available by appointment to provide spiritual direction if desired. Opportunities for classes and workshops can be found locally at Wheeling Jesuit University, the Howard Long Wellness Center, and Oglebay Park. The Center can accomodate 10 overnight guests.

Sabbatical opportunity: The apartment at Saint Joseph Center is available for extended periods of time. It is a lovely setting consisting of a sitting room, bedroom, small kitchen and outside porch. The Center is located on 100 acres of woodland and rolling hills. It is within easy walking distance of Oglebay Park and close to the Stifle Center and Oglebay Institute for cultural opportunities and the local wellness center where one can take classes in yoga, tai chi etc. The Center is ecumenical in nature though we offer Roman catholic services for guests. We do rent out the space if the group is looking to have their own retreat or quiet time. Please fill out the form below for more information.

The St. Joseph Retreat Center now offers its visitors a unique prayer opportunity. Guests can pursue quiet thoughts while walking through the labyrinth. Walking meditation is a form of "body prayer," a way of using the whole body.

St. Joseph's has an extensive calendar of workshops and programs.

Claymont Society
667 Huyett Road
Charles Town, WV 25414

Fashioned after a design by George Washington, the Claymont Mansion was built by his grand-nephew, Bushrod Washington, in 1820. It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Mansion is a picturesque and protected environment for seminars, conferences, workshops, or retreats for up to 30 people.

The Great Barn provides a less formal setting and can accomodate up to 80 people in private and shared rooms. It is situated at the southern end of the estate. The Great Barn has a large dining hall and an expansive meeting room with maple flooring, as well as several rooms designed for meetings of smaller groups. The 9,000 square foot Octagon hall at the east end represents a unique venue for dance, martial arts, meditation, and a meeting space that can accommodate large groups.

Our Mission - To provide education and a place of learning for ourselves and others, with the aim of raising our own level of consciousness and contributing to the evolution of consciousness on the planet. To promote a way of life that is balanced, harmonious, and responsible toward nature.

The Claymont Society for Continuous Education is both a non-profit educational organization and a community. Continuous education implies that by increasing the depth of our awareness and understanding we can be more fully connected to our environment, each other, and our own deeper nature, as well as living fully satisfying and meaningful lives. There are skills, concepts, and values that must be learned before we can shift from a self-centered existence to one that takes into consideration nature and our fellow humans.

The Claymont Society aims to offer a variety of educational means that enable this shift. We have classes and projects that demonstrate the skills required for sustainable living. We have on-going study groups and programs that aim to increase our capacity for attention, patience, consciousness, and love, which all lead to increased being and a true sense of community. We strive to have all programs have an educational component. For example the agriculture program is an opportunity to give interns a chance to learn organic gardening skills.

We have seminars, retreats, conferences, an organic garden, and various other programs that promote the goals of sustainability and continuous education. Those who work on and support these projects form the Claymont community. Claymont aims at using the synergy of a diverse group of people engaged in a diverse set of projects to cooperate to form one well functioning organism that serves the aim of continuous education and also maintains the facilities and assets of the Claymont Society. The Claymont Society hosts like-minded groups who use our facilities for seminars and retreats that promote their own approaches to sustainable living and inner development. All of these programs have education as their common thread and are inter-dependent.
