Contemplative Outreach of Metropolitan Washington
Washington, DC Metro Area

Our purpose is to share the method of Centering Prayer and its immediate conceptual background

Contemplative Outreach is a spiritual network of individuals and small faith communities committed to the practice of Centering Prayer and to renewing the contemplative dimension of the Gospel. While it is ecumenical in composition and outlook, the individuals who affiliate with it are united in their common search for God.

Centering Prayer is a method designed to facilitate contemplative prayer by preparing one to receive the gift of contemplative prayer. It presents an ancient Christian teaching (e.g., "The Cloud of Unknowing") in a contemporary form. It is not meant to replace other types of prayer; it simply puts them into a new and fuller perspective.

Contemplative Outreach of Metropolitan Washington (COMW) supports introductory workshops, small groups, group facilitator enrichment, retreats and days of contemplative enrichment. If you or your faith community wish to draw upon any of its resources, please contact COMW.

St. Anselm's Abbey
Washington, DC

All guests who present themselves are to be received as Christ, for he will say, 'I was a stranger and you took me in'.

Perhaps the greatest number of visitors come for a retreat, a day or two or three or a week. We do not offer organized retreats for groups, but a small group might come with its own leader. There is always opportunity to consult with a monk. Individual retreats on the Ignatian pattern of "directed retreat" can be arranged with a retreat master beforehand. Most of our visitors simply come for the opportunity to share the Divine Office (though this is not required) and to enjoy the leisure and the quiet atmosphere of the Abbey.

As we do not have a separate Guest House we are limited in our capacity to receive women overnight, since all guests share meals in the monastic refectory and the 8 guest rooms are within the monastery enclosure.
