Spiritual Direction is a process of listening together for the presence and voice of God in the life of the directee. This presence and voice may be experienced during times of prayer, scripture reading, journaling, and in personal reflection. It may well be experience in the midst of daily life and encounters with people in family, the workplace, church and in interactions with the surrounding culture and environment.

Spiritual Direction is not about being "directed." It is not counseling or therapy. It is about reflecting deeply on the experiences of daily life in the context of prayer. It is about recognizing God's presence and grace in the directee's life. The director companions the directees on their journey, encouraging them to draw closer to God and to recognize that God has been waiting for them to seek this closer relationship

The Holy Spirit is the true director in spiritual direction. Sr. Linda's privilege and goal in spiritual direction is to journey with the directees as they deepen in their own recognition and appreciation of God's absolute love for them.

Some gifts of Spiritual Direction include:

  • Growth in relationship with God, self, others and creation
  • Receiving encouragement and affirmation
  • REcognizing and trusting one's own experiences of God
  • Learning to integrate spirituality into one's daily life
  • Help with discernment when choices or decision have to be made
  • Sharing joys, as well as struggles, grief, and disappointments
  • An honored and respectful place to bring questions

Meeting with a spiritual director is usually scheduled for an hour once a month. The session begins with a prayer or some moments of silence. The remainder of time is spent talking together about whatever thoughts, questions, observations, concerns, experiences, or feelings the directee wishes to explore.

Sometimes a book or other resource may be recommended, or some expression through an art or poetic work may be suggested.

Sessions are totally confidential.

Sue Radosti has a master's degree in Christian ministry from North Park Theological Seminary and a graduate certificate in spiritual direction, also from NPTS.

"My spiritual orientation is evangelical Christian; my ministry is ecumenical.I provide traditional B&B lodging on weekends but focus on personal retreats during the week. I am also a licensed massage therapist and seminary-trained spiritual director;both services are offered onsite."

Spiritual Direction:
Sue is seminary trained in the art of spiritual direction and offers either ongoing direction relationships (monthly appointments) or retreat-based services (daily appointments for the duration of your retreat). Spiritual direction isn't really "directive" at all, but a process of sharing, reflecting, and listening with another person for the active presence of God's spirit in your life.

Retreat Planning
If you've never taken a retreat or feel uncomfortably unfocused, Sue is more than happy to help you assess your needs and suggest options for approaching your time alone with God ... or for incorporating a spouse or ministry partner into your retreat.
Assistance is also available for planning group retreats, whether the focus is spiritual, vocational, or recreational.

Prayer and Worship Leadership

For personal or group retreats, Sue is available to lead times of shared prayer or worship, either within the style and traditions of your own faith heritage or in a more ecumenical approach.

Valerie Preston

Cedar Rapids Email 319-373-2145

Valerie is a trained spiritual director through the Franciscan Spirituality Center in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. She lives in Cedar Rapids with her husband and has two grown daughters. Her passion is listening to others and their life stories, their sorrows, joys, questions, and where they see God in their lives. Her direction style is best described as creating an atmosphere with her directees that makes it “safe for the soul to show up and offer it’s guidance.”
“When you speak to me about your deepest questions, you do not want to be fixed or saved: you want to be seen and heard, to have your truth acknowledged and honored. If your problem is soul deep, your soul alone knows what you need to do about it, and my presumptuous advice will only drive your soul back into the woods. So the best service I can render when you speak to me about such a struggle is to hold you faithfully in a space where you can listen to your inner teacher.” (Parker Palmer)
